Characterizing gene expression reprogramming induced by allopolyploïdy for the wheat (2010-2014)
Smahane’s PhD was co-supervised with Boulos Chaloub (75%/25%), from 2010 to 2014.
Summary
This thesis investigates how gene expression is reprogrammed following allopolyploidization in wheat, the process by which a new species arises from the combination and duplication of two parental genomes. Using transcriptomic data from newly formed and stabilized wheat allopolyploids, it characterizes patterns of non-additive gene expression – genes whose expression in the hybrid departs from the simple average of the parental levels – and relates these patterns to genome-wide gene expression additivity previously observed in genetically stable wheat allohexaploids.
